BACOLOD CITY – The University of Negros Occidental–Recoletos (UNO-R) officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art building for its medical students on Tuesday.
The three-story facility, named the Dr. Olivia V. Yanson College of Allied Medical Health Sciences, was donated by Dr. Olivia Villaflores Yanson, fondly called “OVY.”
Dr. Yanson was joined by her son Leo Rey Yanson, her daughter Ginnette Yanson-Dumancas, and UNO-R school officials in leading the inauguration, marking a significant milestone for the institution.
Construction of the building began in March last year and was completed in January 2025.
While the cost of the multi-million-peso project was not disclosed, its value to the university and its students is immeasurable.
Rev. Fr. Joel Alve, OAR, UNO-R president, highlighted the building’s cutting-edge facilities, which include modern classrooms, advanced laboratories, and clinical simulation centers.

The facility will also house research centers where faculty and students can conduct innovative studies in allied health sciences.
“This is a significant milestone for UNO-R, as it underscores our commitment to providing students with the best resources and education in allied health sciences,” Fr. Alve said.
The building will serve students pursuing degrees in Medical Technology, Pharmacy, and Nursing.
In her speech, Dr. Yanson expressed her joy at the facility’s completion, emphasizing its role in shaping future healthcare professionals.
“The facility is an opportunity for them to pursue their dreams of becoming lifesavers—the unsung heroes of modern society,” she said.
Dr. Yanson, a registered nurse from Bayawan City, Negros Oriental, reflected on her journey and her mission to help the sick and comfort the weak.
“These humanitarian works are closest to my heart, as they give me peace and solace, knowing I’ve touched the lives of those who cannot afford proper medical care,” she shared.
She hopes the facility will become a nurturing home for aspiring healthcare professionals, fostering compassion and a commitment to humanitarian service.
“I hope that when they go out into the real world, they will carry with them the spirit of humanitarian service to our less fortunate brothers and sisters,” she said.
In August 2023, UNO-R awarded Dr. Yanson an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Business Management (Honoris Causa) for her extensive philanthropic contributions.
Dr. Yanson, owner of the country’s largest bus company, which employs over 18,000 people, has been celebrated for her lasting impact on society.
Fr. Alve encouraged students to maximize the opportunities provided by the new facility, drawing inspiration from St. Augustine’s words: “Love and do what you will.”
He also urged faculty and staff to work together in creating a legacy of innovation, compassion, and service.
“Let us guide our students with patience and wisdom as they embark on their journey to become skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals,” he said.
Fr. Alve expressed gratitude to Dr. Yanson and her family for their generous donation, recognizing her as a distinguished alumna and advocate for healthcare education.
“Her vision and support have made this building a reality, and we are deeply grateful for this remarkable contribution,” he said.
