BACOLOD CITY – A one-year-old baby lost his left leg after being wounded in a hacking attack allegedly carried out by his uncle in Barangay Isio, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, on Sunday.
Police Lt. Col. Lowell Garinganao, chief of the Cauayan Municipal Police Station, said the baby’s father, a 36-year-old identified as “Rey,” went to the house of the suspect, a 42-year-old man identified as “Tata,” to ask for help after Rey’s live-in partner—Tata’s sister—fell ill following an argument.
Without warning, the suspect allegedly attacked Rey with a cane cutter, leading to a scuffle over the weapon.
The suspect reportedly regained control of the blade and struck Rey, who sustained hack wounds to both legs.
The baby, whom Rey was carrying at the time, was also hit during the attack.
Neighbors rushed the victims to a hospital, and the baby was later transferred to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City.
Garinganao said the suspect may have held a grudge against Rey, which could have triggered the attack.
He added that police are waiting for Rey’s decision on whether to press charges against his common-law brother-in-law, who remains at large.
