The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a crucial flood control project along the Jaro-Aganan River in Barangay Bagumbayan, Alimodian, Iloilo significantly ahead of its revised October 2024 deadline.
The Php 96.499-million project, which was undertaken by the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office, aims to protect the communities along the river from the devastating effects of heavy rainfall and typhoons.
The structure includes a 665-lineal meter, six-meter-high revetment wall that will help mitigate the risks of flooding and erosion.
Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel emphasized the importance of the new infrastructure in safeguarding lives and livelihoods in the area.
“This will significantly reduce the risk of flooding and erosion of riverbanks by diverting, storing, and releasing floodwaters in a controlled manner,” said Oropel.
“With this strong defense, communities along the river will be protected from possible damage to property and livelihood, loss of life, and contamination of drinking water sources that may be caused by flooding.”
Oropel also highlighted the importance of protecting Aganan Bridge, a vital transportation link in the region.
The new flood control structure will prevent damage to the bridge during heavy floods, ensuring continuous road access for motorists and commuters.
District Engineer Mario G. Soriano added that the project also supports environmental sustainability by reducing sedimentation and pollution in the river, which can have long-term benefits for the local ecosystem.
“Most residents along this river depend on agricultural production and animal raising. The flood control structure will protect their source of living, making them earn more for their needs, eventually enhancing local economic development,” Soriano said.
The project, which is part of the FY 2023 DPWH Infrastructure Program, is expected to bolster the local economy by safeguarding agricultural lands and ensuring continuous access to essential infrastructure.
The Aganan River, which stretches through several municipalities in Iloilo, has been prone to severe flooding in the past, causing significant damage to both properties and livelihoods.
The completion of the additional flood control measures is expected to bring relief to local residents and help minimize the impact of future floods. (DPWH)
