Alex Eala Climbs to No. 73 in WTA Rankings

Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala has achieved a new career-high in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings, climbing to No. 73 following a series of strong performances, including a breakthrough run at the 2025 Miami Open.

Eala rose two spots from No. 75 in the latest WTA update released Monday (Philippine time), building on her historic leap last week when she jumped from No. 140 after her semifinal finish in Miami.

The 19-year-old stunned the tennis world during the WTA 1000 event by defeating three Grand Slam champions — Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys and world No. 1 Iga Swiatek — before falling to world No. 4 Jessica Pegula in the semifinals.

According to the WTA, rankings are calculated based on a player’s performance across a maximum of 18 singles tournaments and 12 doubles events, with points awarded based on the tournament tier and round progression.

Eala’s latest jump is attributed not only to her Miami run but also to player movements above her in the rankings, which reshuffled the global standings.

Now firmly inside the WTA Top 75, Eala is preparing for a packed European clay season that begins April 14 at the Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal, a WTA 125 tournament.

She will next compete at the prestigious Madrid Open on April 22, another WTA 1000 event, followed by the Catalonia Open in Vic, Spain, also a WTA 125 competition.

Her clay campaign continues in Rome for the WTA 1000 Italian Open on May 6, and concludes with the Parma Ladies Open, a WTA 125 event in Italy, on May 12.

In an interview on “Power and Play,” hosted by her uncle and sports anchor Noli Eala, Alex said her schedule had to be adjusted after her Miami success but maintained her commitment to consistent training.

“In the end, I still have the same work ethic, I’m putting in the same hours—just with more results on my back,” Eala said.

The Miami Open run marked Eala’s most successful showing at a high-tier WTA event, boosting both her ranking and international recognition.

Her recent performances continue to bolster Philippine tennis on the global stage, with Eala now regarded as one of the country’s top sports prospects and a potential Olympian for Paris 2024.

As of April 2025, Eala has earned approximately PHP 18.3 million (USD 326,000) in career prize money, according to WTA data.
