Could this be the biggest boxing fight of the year?
According to multiple sources, Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford, two of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the past five years, will be squaring off this September in a highly-anticipated clash of the titans revealed on February 4, 2025.
ESPN’s veteran boxing insider Mike Coppinger first aired the update, followed by another post written by DAZN, a British boxing streaming and entertainment platform.
Several rumors of the blockbuster fight already went viral when Saudi Arabian billionaire Turki Alalshikh teased the boxing scene that Crawford wanted to challenge Alvarez this year, despite going up two weight divisions.
Crawford is currently fighting in the super welterweight division, which means that he needs to gain more weight to reach Alvarez in the super middleweight division.
Alvarez will put his World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC), and World Boxing Organization (WBO) super middleweight championship belts on the line and is seeking another unification title defense.
Coppinger also said that the fight contract didn’t include any catchweight or rehydration clauses, which means that both fighters’ weight during the fight day won’t have any limit.
However, before taking on Crawford, Alvarez will first handle his business in his upcoming fight on May 3, 2025, the highlight of Mexico’s Cinco de Mayo.
His opponent is yet to be determined but reports already surfaced that Cuban power puncher William Scull has been considered.
Before stepping inside the ring, Alvarez carried a momentum-boosting five-fight winning streak against Gennadiy Golovkin, John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguia, and Edgar Berlanga.
On the other hand, ring rust issues recently clouded Crawford and his camp after being out of the professional boxing ring for almost seven months.
Since his clinical demolition on Errol Spence Jr., Crawford has only returned to the ring once, against Israil Madrimov.
