Kids, let us time travel! The National Museum Western Visayas invites children aged 7 to 10 years to join in the free public program, “Let’s Excavate: An Archaeology Lecture-Workshop for Kids” on July 22, 9AM to 12PM and 2PM to 4PM, at the Old Prison of Iloilo, Capitol Complex, Iloilo City.
This school break activity aims to inspire children to take interest in archaeology, or in the study of material remains to understand the life of humans in the past. It also promotes heritage appreciation through experiential activities in the museum.
Participants will meet Ilonggo archaeologist, Dr. Riczar Fuentes, an assistant professor of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ateneo de Manila University. Dr. Fuentes is from Guimbal, Iloilo.
Dr. Fuentes is an alumnus of UP Visayas (BA History), UP Diliman School of Archaeology (MA Archaeology), and University of Tubingen in Germany (Ph.D Archaeological Sciences). He specializes in use-wear analysis, stone tool analysis, Southeast Asian Prehistoric archaeology.
In the workshop, the participants will dig sandboxes containing ‘ecofacts’ and ‘artifacts’ imitating the work of archaeologists. The workshop will conclude with a tour to the galleries, particularly the Oton Gold Death Mask and Geology and Paleontology to view actual artifacts and fossils. This is a FREE EVENT.
