BACOLOD CITY – Military troopers recovered high-powered firearms and assorted ammunition in the hinterlands of Don Salvador Benedicto (DSB) in Negros Occidental early Monday.
Captain Dan Carlo Samoza, civil military operations (CMO) officer of the Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion (IB), said they discovered the arms cache buried in an undisclosed area of the town.
Samoza said former members of the New People’s Army (NPA), who recently surrendered to government forces, and a tip from civilians led to the discovery of the arms cache.
Samoza reported that three high-powered firearms, one low-powered firearm, and assorted ammunition were recovered.
He explained that this operation is part of their efforts against the remnants of the dismantled Northern Negros Front (NNF)-D, which operates in the tri-boundaries of DSB, San Carlos City, and Calatrava town.
Samoza noted that the 79th IB has conducted continuous focused military operations in recent months to prevent remnants of the NNF-D from committing atrocities.
“Siguro, out of their intention na makalabas na hindi madedetect, iiwan nila iyong firearms in a certain area, and babalikan if medyo okay na ang sitwasyon,” he added.
Four NPA remnants, reported to have been involved in clashes in Barangay Pinapugasan, Escalante City, in February this year, surrendered to the military troopers last week.
