The Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) has intensified its campaign against loose firearms as the election period approaches.
Colonel Bayani Razalan, Iloilo police chief, said the crackdown on unlicensed firearms is part of their efforts to enhance public safety.
“We don’t want these firearms to be used in crimes or to threaten individuals,” he said.
Since last month, the IPPO has conducted a series of targeted search warrant operations against individuals suspected of possessing unlicensed guns. The police are also monitoring criminal groups and drug gangs as part of their anti-criminality initiatives.
In September alone, the IPPO conducted 23 search warrant operations, leading to the arrest of 14 individuals for illegal possession of firearms and other prohibited items.
Police confiscated 25 loose firearms, two explosives, and 122 rounds of ammunition. Eighteen cases have been filed in court against those arrested.
“Our commitment to ridding our neighborhoods of loose firearms is unwavering, as they pose a significant threat to peace and order,” Razalan said, praising the dedication of IPPO personnel in addressing the proliferation of illegal firearms.
Razalan also urged individuals unlawfully possessing firearms to voluntarily surrender them to local police stations, warning that failure to comply could lead to severe legal consequences.
He appealed to the public for support in their campaign, encouraging them to report any information about illegal activities, especially the possession of unlicensed firearms.
“This collaboration between law enforcement and the public is vital for maintaining safety and security throughout Iloilo. Through these ongoing initiatives, the IPPO remains dedicated to creating a safer, more peaceful environment for all,” Razalan added.
