In commemoration of National Women’s Month, the Iloilo-based theater group, 033 Playhouse (033 PH), presented “Babayi: Monologues of Herstories.”

The theatrical production paid homage to the resilience of women who have navigated life’s challenges and combated entrenched gender stereotypes.

Eric Divinagracia, the Artistic Director of the University of San Agustin Little Theater (USALT), directed the performance, which explored a spectrum of themes including trauma, abuse, and women’s complex realities in today’s world.

The show, staged at the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA) on March 24, captured the audience’s attention with its visceral performances and introspective tales of the female experience.

The play featured monologues from a cast of emblematic figures such as Alunsina, Maria Clara, Darna, and Miss Philippines, highlighting their unique stories.

These performances gave voice to a wide array of women’s experiences across different walks of life, resonating with messages of empowerment and perseverance.

Anthea Dulfo, in her portrayal of Alunsina, confronted traditional gender roles and power structures, celebrating women’s strength and autonomy.

Lemos, as Maria Clara, engaged the audience with a mix of humor and intensity, revealing the character’s struggles with abuse and familial pressures.

Arvee’s segment addressed the intricate nature of modern relationships and the quest for self-identity, while Cha, embodying Darna, offered a reflection on the intersection of the beloved superheroine and Philippine politics, underscoring their influence on societal change.

“Babayi: Monologues of Herstories” not only provided entertainment but also ignited important dialogues among its viewers.

Char Suarez, Production Manager of 033PH, articulated the play’s role in highlighting Women’s Month, emphasizing the stage as a platform for female representation.

In a radio interview, she emphasized 033 Play House’s commitment to elevating the voices of women and the Ilonggo community through their theatrical work.

“Part of the objectives of the 033 Play House is to really share the words and share theater pieces that are originally written by Ilonggos. It’s not just limited to USA LT because we also want to open a theater group that will serve as a safe space where everyone is welcome,” she explained.

The play closed with an invitation from Director Divinagracia and 033 PH, encouraging all actors and artists with a passion for theater to join their inclusive community.
