The Iloilo Provincial Government, led by Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., formally inaugurated the 4.45-kilometer Baclayan-Damires Provincial Road on February 14, marking a significant step toward economic growth and improved connectivity for New Lucena residents.
The PHP49.07-million project was funded through the provincial government’s 20 percent national tax allocation for 2022 and 2023.
Provincial Engineer Romeo Andig highlighted the road’s impact on local development, saying it will facilitate the movement of goods, reduce travel time, enhance emergency response capabilities, and improve access to government services.
“Well-maintained roads are crucial for economic development, social connectivity, safety, and overall quality of life, especially in rural areas,” he said.
Defensor assured residents that more development projects are in the pipeline for the municipality.
He announced a PHP12-million allocation for the completion of the Jelicuon-Cagban road this year and PHP1.8 million for the repair of Badiang Elementary School buildings.
“This inspires us to do better. What’s important is that every time we visit, we bring something new for the community,” Defensor said.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by local leaders, including New Lucena Mayor Liecel Mondejar-Seville, Vice Mayor Isabelo Accolador, and Anilao Mayor Lee Ann Debuque, who represented the League of Municipalities of the Philippines. Municipal and barangay officials were also present.
Mayor Seville expressed gratitude to the provincial government for its continued infrastructure support.
She emphasized the road’s importance in improving the transport of agricultural goods, which will directly benefit local farmers.
