BACOLOD CITY – The Bacolod City Council has unanimously approved a resolution declaring business tycoon Hans T. Sy an adopted son and honorary mayor of the city.
The declaration was made in response to a request by Mayor Alfredo “Albee” Benitez as part of the city’s celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year (Year of the Snake) on January 29, 2025.
In his December 3 letter to the City Council, Benitez described Sy as a distinguished member of the Filipino-Chinese community who has made exceptional contributions to economic development, business leadership, and philanthropy.
The mayor highlighted Sy’s role as a role model for community progress and innovation, emphasizing his profound commitment to social responsibility, family values, and civic engagement.
Benitez also credited Sy’s leadership for driving business growth and investment in Bacolod City, aligning with the ideals of the Chinese-Filipino community.
Councilor Jason Villarosa, chair of the Committee on Tourism, said in a media interview that Sy’s contributions to the city, including significant developments, justify the honor.
Villarosa cited projects such as the establishment of SM City Bacolod, the redevelopment of Manokan Country, and improvements to a property near the Sta. Fe area as examples of Sy’s impact.
“I think it’s high time to give him honor,” Villarosa said.
Sy is expected to attend the Bacolaodiat Festival, which will take place from January 31 to February 2, 2025.
Villarosa added that the city will allocate PHP 5 million for next year’s festival, the same amount provided for last year’s event.
