Bakunawa Film Festival launches 7thEdition

The 7th Edition of the Bakunawa Cinema of the Young – Bakunawa Film Festival opened on May 6, 2021 via Bakunawa’s Vimeo Channel.

The opening films included two from the Philippines – Sa Punta Sang Balangaw by young Negrense filmmaker Justine Ogapong and Ang Lalaking May Regla sa Gitna ng Dagat by filmmaker James Allen Fajardo with See You Next Century by one of Malaysia’s acclaimed and award-winning directors, James Lee.

This year’s Bakunawa Film Festival is anchored on the tagline “The Age of Uncertainty is the Time to be Unorthodox” which is apt for the selection of films that are brave, unconventional and not the usual offerings of other festivals.

The festival will have special focus on Young Vietnamese Cinema which will be announced on May 10 along with the programmed closing films. There will also be a series of Film and Art talks top billed by one of the country’s prominent film critics, author and educator Prof. Tito Valiente, who will talk about film appreciation for the young; and, Prague-based Brazilian artist and puppeteer Gilberto Conti who will give a workshop on creating puppets from recycled materials.

Bakunawa 7 boasts of a fresh approach to film programming, releasing one to three films a day for the whole month of May which also includes an album launch and three live musical performances by young music artists. This year, there will be a total of 50 films from the Philippines and abroad coming from countries like France, Indonesia, Japan, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Italy and more.
