A village official died after being hit by a van on the evening of October 16 in Zarraga, Iloilo.

According to reports, Barangay Captain Belliardo Cerbolles, 58, of Dawis Norte, Zarraga, was on his way home when the incident occurred.

Witnesses said Cerbolles allowed a multi-cab to pass before crossing the road.

However, he failed to see an oncoming Isuzu closed van (license plate AAJ7877) traveling in the rightmost lane.

The van’s driver, Richard Carigaba, 49, of Barangay Sariri, Badiangan, Iloilo, stated he was driving at a speed of 60 kph when the incident occurred.

Captain Dandy Ilalto, Zarraga police chief, said the van’s side mirror hit the village chief before he struck the windshield.

Cerbolles was then thrown about seven meters from the point of impact.

He was rushed to Iloilo Provincial Hospital in Pototan, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Carigaba voluntarily surrendered after the incident.

Ilalto confirmed that a case for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide has been filed against the driver.
