Biron, Ang to lead groundbreaking of ISUFST’s Olympic-size sports facilities

The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) is set to commence construction on a state-of-the-art sports complex at the Main Campus-Tiwi Site this Thursday, May 2, 2024, in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.

The groundbreaking ceremony will feature Rep. Ferjenel Biron of the 4th District of Iloilo and Uswag Ilonggo Rep. James Ang Jr., key figures in funding and developing this project.

The transition from Iloilo State College of Fisheries into ISUFST, marked by the enactment of Republic Acts No. 10604 and 11012, spearheaded by Cong. Biron, underscores a significant stride in the university’s evolution.

Rep. Ang played a critical role by securing an initial P80 million funding, essential for the sports complex that will feature an Olympic-size swimming pool, a rubberized 10-lane oval, both with grandstands, and an outdoor basketball court.

ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr., expressed his gratitude towards the lawmakers.

“The support from Cong. Biron and Cong. Ang has been the foundation for bringing this project to fruition. As we lay the first stones of what will be a landmark facility, we are reminded of their unwavering commitment to not only our university’s growth but also to the advancement of sports and community engagement in our region.”

The groundbreaking event, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., will not only highlight the future sports facilities but also celebrate the collaborative efforts that have propelled this initiative.

Key attendees will include officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), local government personnel, and members of the ISUFST community, encompassing students, faculty, staff, and administrative leaders.

The new facilities are poised to significantly enhance the university’s capability to host both national and international sports events, thereby enriching the physical and social development of students.

These dual-purpose facilities aim to promote high-level athletic competitions and support academic programs in fisheries and marine biology through practical applications, affirming the university’s commitment to holistic education and community engagement.

The sports complex is anticipated to substantially elevate the university’s infrastructure, contributing to the region’s sporting landscape and academic integration, ensuring that ISUFST remains at the forefront of educational and athletic excellence. (Text by Herman Lagon; Designs by the PDO/PAMCO)
