Businessman fatally shot outside store

Police are investigating the motive behind the fatal shooting of a businessman at Purok Mabinuligon, Barangay Camindangan, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, last Friday.

The victim, identified as 37-year-old Donie Bacoli, was also a farmer and a former chief village watchman, or tanod.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Fernando Somblingo Jr., the city police chief, reported that Bacoli was inside his sari-sari store when an unidentified individual called him outside.

When Bacoli stepped out, the suspect shot him with an unknown firearm, resulting in his death.

“Based on the information we have, Bacoli had resigned as chief village watchman and was focusing on his small businesses,” Somblingo said.

He noted that they have yet to establish a motive, as there are no witnesses to the incident. The police have also been unable to speak with the victim’s family, who are still grieving.

When asked about the possibility of the incident being insurgency-related, Somblingo stated, “We cannot confirm anything unless we have concrete evidence.”

This follows an April 25 claim by the New People’s Army (NPA) of responsibility for the death of a 43-year-old man in the same village.
