A WEEK before the much-anticipated Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet, the province of Capiz installed a new rubberized oval track at the Villareal Stadium.
The annual regional meet, which will be hosted by Capiz from Feb. 17 to 23, gathers athletes from Iloilo, Aklan, Antique, Negros Occidental, and Guimaras.
The repaired oval track stands out with its new color and matches the Olympic size swimming pool hue. Four concrete cottages were also constructed at the poolside.
According to Capiz Aksyon News Center reporter Froilan Unarce, four new tennis courts, among others, were also constructed at the stadium which is being prepared as the main venue of various competitions.
The 10-hectare sports center built in 1962, has undergone several improvements over the years to make it at par with other premier sports facilities in the country.
As for their preparations, the provincial government also intensified the Capiceño athletes training program and gave incentives to athletes who were medalists last year in the WVRAA and Palarong Pambansa.
The hosting of Capiz was tested when they organized the 2nd Capiz International Triathlon dubbed TriAksyon 2018 that was conceptualized to push the province as a preferred sports destination in the country.
TriAksyon 2018 included a special race category exclusively for budding Capiceño triathlon athletes aged 16 to 19 years.
They will also host the swim, bike and run competition this summer.
