ROXAS CITY, Capiz – Chester Acuyong of Capiz salvaged a gold medal in the secondary boys standard chess category of the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) meet held at the Governor Corazon Cabagnot Training Center in Old Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan, April 30.
With the win, Acuyong, a grade 9 student of Capiz National High School (CNHS), secured a slot in the 2023 Palarong Pambansa for WVRAA.
The Capiz NHS chess standout earned 4.5 points in the standard category to outscore Region 6 chess counterparts.
“First, I would like to say thank you to our Almighty God, my parents, DepEd, Provincial Government of Capiz, my coach sir Roger Corros, my teammates, to the Capiznon Chess Club, Sir Hanz Tutica, Sir Edward Basilonia and National Master Francis Jocson for their financial and moral support as well as trainings for my campaign for the pride and honor of Capiz,” Acuyong said.
“I know, it’s not easy because all my chess board opponents are champions in their respective provinces,” he added.
Acuyong, dubbed as the new rising star of Capiz chess, topped the Under-15 Boys elimination for National Youth and Schools Chess Championship held recently in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.
