BACOLOD CITY – Police are still probing the motive in the killing of a casual government employee at Sitio Balugo, Barangay Sangke, Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental early Monday morning.

The victim was identified by Police Major Jaynick Bermudez, the town police chief, as 43-year-old Darrel Cayao of Barangay Asia who worked at the local command center.

Major Bermudez reported that Cayao and a companion were riding a motorcycle home from Basay, Negros Oriental, when an assailant ambushed them, striking Cayao in the head.

Cayao sustained a single stab wound to the chest as well. After both riders crashed to the ground, Cayao’s companion, who incurred minor injuries, fled the scene in panic.

Found injured on the roadside, Cayao was transported to a hospital and subsequently pronounced dead.

Major Bermudez suspects that the assailant lay in wait for Cayao to arrive. He also noted that while the suspect has been identified, the investigation is ongoing.
