A 105-year-old male resident of Maasin town in Iloilo province lost his battle against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Maasin Mayor Francisco Amboy confirmed in radio interviews that the patient expired last August 26, 2020 while admitted to West Visayas State University Medical Center (WVSU-MC).
According to Amboy, the patient was brought to hospital after experiencing illnesses due to old age. He then exhibited signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and his situation worsened.
“Bangod sa katigulangon kag mga ginabtyag nga sakit gindala sa ospital ang pasyente. Apang nakabtyag siya sang sintomas sang COVID-19 kag ginpaidalom sa swab test bilang protocol,” he said.
He expired last Wednesday and his remains were already taken to a funeral parlor when his confirmatory result was released on Saturday.
Amboy immediately informed the family of the patient and advised them to cremate the body.
Close contacts of the patient have been subjected to swab test and strict home quarantine, he added.
Meanwhile, Amboy said he also ordered the lockdown of the funeral parlor and confirmatory testing of the employees who were exposed to the patient.
The patient is the oldest Covid-19 fatality in the region, so far.
As of August 30, 2020, Western Visayas logged 71 fatalities while the total cumulative cases spiked to 4,454 with 2,114 active cases. (ERS)
