The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) designed practicum guidelines for BS Fisheries students for Midyear 2021.
CFOS Dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap said the guidelines include activities that maximize and achieve the learning outcomes of the course Fish 195 (Practicum).
Fish 195 allows the students to be exposed to recent developments in the different fisheries sectors or institutions. It also provides students with a deeper understanding of the applications of fisheries sciences to various fields and broadens their perspectives on the different career opportunities after graduation.
Yap created an AdHoc committee primarily tasked to draft the guidelines for the practicum of BS Fisheries students who are enrolled for Midyear 2021.
Yap said that the practicum could not be delayed because it would affect the day-to-day activities of the students when face-to-face classes resume. She added that the students would not graduate on time if they do not enroll in the course this semester.
Though the practicum will be done online this semester, Yap assured the students that they would have as much learning as the face-to-face setup. She said the students would also have the opportunity to interact with people in the industry.
The four institutes of the CFOS, namely, the Institute of Aquaculture, Institute of Fish Processing Technology, Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology, and the Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies, prepared specific activities for their students to accomplish.
Asst. Prof. Queenee Dequito, chair of the AdHoc committee and coordinator for instruction of CFOS, presented the general guidelines and requirements in an online orientation to discuss the implementation of the practicum held on July 1, 2021. It was participated by 51 students and faculty members.
Dequito discussed the practicum structure, mode of delivery, activity guides, expected output, and duration of the practicum.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Farisal Ungkakay-Bagsit talked about the practicum waiver, while Mr. Vince Neil Fuertes talked about the practicum waiver and the overview of the student summit and competition.
The Practicum Student Summit is a culminating activity that serves as a platform for students to share their practicum experiences. The practicum students will vie for best poster and oral presentations. (Lenilyn Basco-Gallos/CFOS)
