The Institute of Fish Processing Technology-College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS-IFPT) of UP Visayas, conducted “Livelihood Training on Fish Processing Technology” held in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo on April 15-16, 2021.
The training was undertaken upon the request of the Department of Public Works and Highways Iloilo, 3rd District Engineering Office, Gender and Development (DPWH Iloilo-3rd DEO GAD) in celebration of the 2021 National Women’s Month.
The 2-day lecture and hands-on training covered a holistic approach toward fish processing with topics on fish handling, fish processing technologies, storage and packaging, good manufacturing practices and personal hygiene, and the financial aspect of entrepreneurship.
The trainees, mostly DPWH personnel who are job order employees, were taught how to prepare “hamonado,” “lamayo,” bagoong,” and “patis.
They were taught how to prepare marinades, process raw material, dry fish, practice product formulation using minced fish such as fish burgers and balls, and utilize fish processing wastes by transforming these into fermented fish products.
Ms. Rose T. Mueda and Ms. Ernestina M. Peralta, researchers of the IFPT, were the resource speakers.

Following the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) guidelines, the training is the initial activity in a series of collaborative activities of IFPT with the DPWH Iloilo 3rd DEO to provide additional sustainable livelihoods for its job order employees and those with an entrepreneurial mindset.
IFPT offers livelihood training programs specific to the fishery resources available in the communities which are suited to the needs of its clients.
