BACOLOD CITY – Authorities have ordered evacuations and suspended classes after the eruption of Kanlaon volcano at 3:03 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2024.
Canlaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas instructed residents in Barangays Malaiba, Lumapao, Pula, and Masulog near the volcano to evacuate. Eight families from Barangay Masulog have already relocated, as evacuation within the six-kilometer danger zone is mandatory.
Cardenas announced the suspension of classes in all public and private schools starting December 9. Work in government offices is also suspended, except for agencies involved in disaster response and essential services.
In a video posted on the Salta Canlaon Facebook page, Cardenas implemented additional safety measures, including mandatory face masks due to heightened sulfur dioxide levels, a curfew for minors from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and a liquor ban. Establishments must close by 10 p.m.
“We are facing a challenging time, but I am confident in the resilience and cooperation of the people of Canlaon. Your safety is our top priority,” Cardenas said, urging residents to comply with directives and trust responders.
The eruption produced a plume rising 3,000 meters above the vent, drifting west-southwest, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). Pyroclastic density currents descended the southeastern slopes, prompting PHIVOLCS to raise the alert level from 2 to 3, indicating magmatic unrest and the potential for more explosive eruptions.
In La Castellana, Negros Occidental, evacuations began in Barangays Sag-ang, Masulog, and Mansalanao. Tourism officer Remuel Lajo said most evacuees are staying at the town’s covered court, with public schools prepared as additional shelters. He reported no panic, as residents were prepared for such an event.
Mayor Alme Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan, currently in Manila for an award ceremony, has ordered the suspension of classes in La Castellana. Barangay Captain Marvin Escander confirmed residents in Cabacungan have also evacuated.
Ashfall was reported in Barangay Ilijan, Bago City, though official confirmation from local authorities is pending.
Kanlaon volcano’s last eruption, on June 3, displaced thousands across Negros Island. PHIVOLCS has advised local government units to enforce evacuations within the six-kilometer radius and prepare for additional measures if activity escalates.
“We must remain united in protecting our community,” Cardenas said, emphasizing vigilance and adherence to safety protocols.
