The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) conducted an orientation on the new Automated Counting Machine (ACM) for students and personnel of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) ahead of the 2025 midterm elections.
Election Officer Jessie Borro Jr. and Election Assistant Sean Gregory Genzola from COMELEC Miagao led the demonstration at the College Union Building, Miagao campus, on January 22, 2025, as part of the agency’s “Automated Counting Machine Nationwide Roadshow.”
The event was attended by students, including first-time voters, and personnel from the Office of Student Affairs.
On January 23, Election Officer Atty. Pinky Jevini Tentativa and Election Assistant Nanelyn Jamero held a similar demonstration for Iloilo City-based faculty, staff, and students at the UPV Little Theatre.
COMELEC personnel highlighted a new ACM feature that allows voters to review their votes on a screen before printing their receipts.
The ACM is also equipped to scan election receipts and generate a summary of results. Additionally, the machine now includes devices designed to assist visually impaired voters.
According to COMELEC, these upgrades aim to enhance accuracy and transparency in the 2025 elections.
Borro explained that COMELEC has been conducting orientations in barangays and academic institutions since December 2024 as part of its voter education campaign, which runs until January 2025.
In an interview, Borro advised voters, particularly first-timers, to arrive at polling precincts early to avoid crowds and bring a guide for a smoother voting experience.
Voting on election day, May 12, 2025, will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Carlson Alelis, IPO)
