BACOLOD CITY – A police officer was injured Tuesday after being attacked by a 27-year-old man armed with bladed weapons in Sitio Acasia, Barangay Gargato, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental.

Police Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, regional director of Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR), commended Police Staff Sgt. Alvin Uy of the Hinigaran Municipal Police Station for his bravery in subduing the suspect, identified only as “John,” at around 1:50 p.m.

According to the police report, the suspect was seen roaming the area carrying two bladed weapons, prompting a call from a concerned citizen.

When officers arrived and attempted to arrest the suspect, he violently resisted and allegedly attacked them.

Uy sustained a minor laceration on his left forearm while subduing the suspect.

Ibay praised Uy’s quick action and commitment to duty.

“We salute Police Staff Sgt. Uy for his bravery and quick action in neutralizing a potential threat to public safety,” he said.

Ibay said Uy’s actions reflect the true spirit of service expected from every member of the Philippine National Police.

The suspect was arrested for direct assault and for violating the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban by carrying bladed weapons in public.

Police said charges are being prepared for formal filing.

Ibay reminded police personnel to exercise caution and maintain situational awareness, especially during election-related operations and periods of heightened alert.

“While we commend our personnel for their commitment, we must also prioritize safety,” he said.

“Let us remain vigilant, follow protocol, and always look out for each other during every deployment.”
