Daily Guardian EIC, Reporter Join Journalism AI Academy

Two Daily Guardian journalists will join media professionals from eight other Southeast Asian countries in a pioneering artificial intelligence program supported by the Google News Initiative.

Editor-in-Chief Francis Allan L. Angelo and Senior Reporter Joseph Bernard Marzan were selected among 20 participants from 68 applicants to the Southeast Asia Academy for Small Newsrooms.

The exclusive training program marks its first dedicated focus on Southeast Asian media, aiming to help small newsrooms effectively integrate AI technologies into their operations.

Angelo and Marzan will participate alongside journalists from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam in exploring AI applications for improved workflows, reporting quality, and audience engagement.

Daily Guardian representatives bring decades of combined journalism experience to the program, with Angelo leading the newspaper’s editorial direction and Marzan covering key beats including local government, politics, law, environment, among others.

Their selection is part of Daily Guardian’s commitment to embracing technological innovation while maintaining journalistic excellence in serving Western Visayas readers.

The JournalismAI Academy, now in its fourth year, has established itself as a crucial platform for helping small newsrooms worldwide adapt to rapidly evolving digital landscapes.

This specialized Southeast Asian cohort will focus on addressing unique regional challenges and opportunities in implementing AI solutions for local news organizations.

The program highlights growing recognition of Southeast Asian journalism’s important role in global media innovation, with participants representing diverse outlets from traditional newspapers to digital-native platforms.

Daily Guardian’s participation in this prestigious program positions it at the forefront of AI integration in Philippine regional journalism, potentially transforming how local news is gathered, produced, and delivered to communities in Western Visayas.
