The dengue death toll in Western Visayas has risen to 51, with cases reaching 20,814 as of August 31, 2024, according to the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD).

This marks a 264% increase compared to the 5,711 cases and 25 deaths reported during the same period last year.

Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, medical coordinator for the emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases cluster at DOH WV CHD, confirmed nine additional dengue-related deaths during the 35th Morbidity Week.

The fatalities include 23 from Iloilo, 10 from Negros Occidental, five from Capiz, four from Iloilo City, three each from Aklan and Bacolod City, two from Antique, and one from Guimaras.

Iloilo continues to record the highest number of cases at 8,039, followed by Negros Occidental with 3,296, Capiz with 2,104, and Aklan with 2,103.

The most affected age group is 11-20 years old, accounting for 34.5% of the cases.

A total of 998 barangays reported clustering of cases, with 21 identified as hotspots.

Natalaray noted that hospital utilization in the region has been between 70% and 72% over the past few weeks.

Hospitals have been advised to manage surge capacity, but not all dengue patients require admission.

The DOH continues to urge the public to follow the 4S Strategy: Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, Self-protection, Seek early consultation, and Support fogging in hotspot areas.

Additionally, the DOH WV CHD is also strengthening its mpox response through town hall meetings, social media campaigns, and improved diagnostics and case management.

“Mpox can affect anyone. However, we can reduce the risk of contracting the disease by practicing good hygiene, avoiding skin-to-skin contact, and, of course, following public health guidelines,” Natalaray said.
