The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 6 and the nation embark on celebrating National Women’s Month in March under the banner, “WE for Gender Equality & Inclusive Society.”
A sea of purple adorned the DENR 6 Courtyard for the kickoff event on March 4, 2024, spearheaded by the Regional Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Point System (RGFPS).
Dr. Ernest C. Federiso, RGFPS Vice Chairperson for Planning and Research, as well as Administrative Division Chief, underscored the urgency to abolish sexual harassment, create secure environments for all genders, and bolster women’s empowerment in his opening address.
He stressed, “No matter what laws protect women, if they do not invoke their rights, those laws are pointless. Here in DENR Region 6, women must stand, fight, and defend their rights.”
Attorney Cheryl Rose V. Librero, Vice Chairperson for RGFPS, conveyed appreciation for trailblazing women on behalf of RGFPS Chairperson For. June Melissa C. Garol and echoed Miss Universe Philippines Iloilo 2024, Alexie Brooks’ exhortation, “Abanse, Babayi!” (Forward, Women!).
Librero honored past efforts for women’s rights, affirming, “Their struggles gave us the equality we enjoy today. Women’s Month remains an essential celebration.”
Assistant Regional Directors Andres T. Untal and Raul L. Lorilla, representing the Management and Technical Services respectively, pledged unwavering support for the event on behalf of Regional Executive Director Livino B. Duran. They urged collective efforts to enhance women’s empowerment in workplaces and communities.
ARD Untal said, “As we globally celebrate Women’s Month, let’s acknowledge the critical roles both women and men hold in striving for gender equality and empowerment.”
ARD Lorilla added: “Women play a crucial role in societal progress. Today’s celebration honors women worldwide, recognizing their contributions from home to nation-building.”
Officials also inaugurated “Women Beyond Lenses,” a photography contest and exhibit that portrays empowered women impacting DENR 6 and the community.
Numerous activities related to National Women’s Month are slated throughout March at the regional office and across Western Visayas’ Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENROs and CENROs). (DENR-6)
