DG Sports Anniversary Special: Different ball, same leather

By Leobert Julian A. de la Peña

One hot Friday afternoon, in front of a hoops stall
I picked up two different balls, one big, one small
I felt their leathers, I gripped hard till it fall
I dribbled the other fast, the other I had to control
Thought rushed, I was quick to judge
That a smaller ball, won’t fit my standards and such
So I went back and purchased the bigger ball
I went home, contented, in my small stock stash I crawled

The following day, I went out for a walk
I was greeted with loud talks by my neighbors who stalk
In a wide court, I saw a bunch of youngsters shoot
I was amazed and inspired, by their dedication as a group
All of a sudden I noticed, that the ball they were using
Was the one that I had to dribble yesterday with control to avoid loose movement
After a split second, I sat, in a rugged black mat
With the joy and laughter, I saw in the children’s faces
I realized that no matter what kind of leather everyone is using,
As long as it gives them joy, I find it inspirational and amusing
So despite all of us using a different ball,
It is still of the same leather
Because birds of a feather, flock together
And no matter how stormy or sunny is the weather
That single bounce of the ball can keep everybody in the room better
