Digital payments, gold buying key topics in BSP information session for North Luzon journalists

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) conducted an information session for journalists in North Luzon as part of its efforts to explain and update local and regional media on current central banking topics, such as digital payments and gold buying in the Cordillera region. Participants were also given a refresher course on the basics of central banking. The two-day session was held in Baguio City from 25 to 26 April 2023.

“The BSP becomes more effective at what it does when what we do and why we do what we do are well communicated and understood by the public whom we serve,” BSP Governor Felipe M. Medalla said in a recorded message. The governor also said that journalists play a critical role in fostering public awareness and appreciation of the BSP’s work in promoting price stability, financial stability, and a safe and efficient payments system.

Deputy Governor Bernadette Romulo-Puyat underscored the BSP’s commitment to continuously engage with media professionals all over the country. “By equipping journalists with the knowledge and skills to understand the financial system, we enhance the BSP’s ability to reach out and empower more Filipinos to make informed financial decisions.”

Representatives from Amianan Balita Ngayon, Baguio Chronicle, Baguio Herald Express, Baguio Midland Courier, Big Sound FM, DZEQ Radyo Pilipinas, DZRH, DZWT 540, Filipino News Sentinel, GMA7, Net25, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine Information Agency, RPN DZBS Radyo Ronda, UNTV, and Z Radio participated in the information session.

The BSP’s Media Information Series aims to broaden the knowledge of media organizations on various topics including digitalization, currency-related matters, price and financial stability, banking regulation, and other central banking concepts.

The central bank previously organized a Media Information Series for journalists in North Luzon and the Visayas in October and November 2021, respectively. The BSP likewise conducted an information session for the broadcast media at its Head Office in Manila in June 2022.
