Dinagyang: Where Culture Meets Hustle

By Maybelle Jabian

As the Dinagyang Festival draws near, Iloilo City transforms into a vibrant hub of activity. Streets bustle with massive preparations, from the construction of props and elaborate designs to road closures, all happening simultaneously.

For many, this celebration is a highlight of the year, but for others, it’s a chance to seize opportunities amid the festive chaos.

While roaming the city streets, I met an inspiring vendor who shared her perspective. She said, “Tsansa na gid ni makabulig sa akon utod kay damo daan foreigners” (This is a chance to help my sibling because many foreigners are here).

For her, Dinagyang is more than just a festival—it’s a chance to work harder and provide for her family.

The Dinagyang Festival runs from January 23 to 26 in Iloilo City’s downtown area, featuring a variety of exciting events and lively street activities.

Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere while supporting local vendors offering unique crafts and goods.

Amid the city’s hustle and bustle, Ilonggos are hopeful that this year’s celebration will embody the true essence of Dinagyang.

It is not just a festival of color and rhythm but a reflection of unity, cultural pride, resilience, and deep faith.
