Novak Djokovic’s quest for a 25th Grand Slam championship title is still alive after blanking Czech netter Jiri Lehecka- 6.3, 6.4, 7.6- in the ongoing Australian Open tournament on January 20, 2025, at the Rod Laver Arena in Australia.

With the lopsided victory, Djokovic reached the quarterfinal stage of the Grand Slam event and arranged a highly-anticipated duel with Carlos Alcaraz who is having a dominant campaign in Melbourne Park.

Unlike his previous match against Tomas Machac where he immediately scored a service break, Djokovic started slow against Lehecka and nearly lost his service possession in the second game set. Fortunately for the more experienced star, he recovered by scoring three consecutive down-the-line forehand bombs to prevent the Czech from gaining early momentum during their fourth-round showdown.

After that sequence, Djokovic began to steamroll his way to a two-way clinic, bullying Lehecka with his efficient baseline top-spins while frustrating the Czech with his top-notch lob shot defense.

Djokovic sealed the deal in the opener after drawing loud cheers off a cross-court return ace, followed by a drop shot that barely kissed the top part of the net for a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, Lehecka devised new ways to put more points on board by targeting Djokovic’s backhand side. The Czech found success in the early part of the set but midway through the second, the Serbian powerhouse ace reverted to his aggressive baseline shots that proved to be too much for his opponent.

Already holding a commanding 2-0 lead, Djokovic didn’t look back and continued to pummel Lehecka from the baseline, raking the first two game sets to establish early momentum in the third.

Out of desperation, Lehecka matched fire with fire and returned Djokovic’s powerful groundstrokes with his own, but the better court generalship of the Serbian steered him to the win and another Australian Open quarterfinal seat.
