DOE Endorses 11 Energy Projects for Grid Study

The Department of Energy (DOE) has endorsed 11 power projects totaling 4,500 megawatts (MW) for a System Impact Study (SIS) by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

These projects include hydropower, wind, coal, and battery energy storage systems (BESS) aimed at strengthening the country’s energy capacity and grid reliability.

The SIS is a critical step in assessing how these power facilities will affect grid stability before they are integrated into the national transmission network.

Among the largest endorsed projects is Pan Pacific Renewable Power Philippines Corporation’s 2,000 MW Maton pumped storage hydropower project in Apayao.

San Roque Hydropower Inc. (SRHI), a subsidiary of San Miguel Global Power Holdings, also received SIS endorsements for its 800 MW San Roque Lower East Hydro Project and 800 MW San Roque West Hydro Project in Benguet.

Wind energy developments include Gemini Wind Energy Corporation’s 304 MW wind farm and Airstream Renewables Corporation’s three projects in Quezon: the 200 MW Real offshore wind project, the 100 MW Silang Maragondon wind farm, and the 40 MW Pandan Labayat wind project.

Other approved projects include the 82 MW circulating fluidized bed coal plant by Toledo Power Co. in Cebu and the 20 MW/30 MWh Panitan BESS by EcoSolar Energy Corporation in Capiz.

Philnew Hydro Power Corporation’s 5.82 MW Mat-i 1 hydroelectric project in Misamis Oriental and Northmin Renewables Corporation’s 200 MW Misor wind project also secured DOE endorsements.

The DOE said these projects align with the government’s goal of increasing renewable energy’s share to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040.

Following SIS approval, the projects must meet NGCP’s technical and regulatory requirements before construction and grid integration.

Once operational, these energy developments are expected to boost power supply, enhance energy security, and support economic growth.
