In promoting a healthy holiday celebration, the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) is urging the public to follow the “Pinggang Pinoy” in making food choices during the holiday season.
Dr. Fritzi Ann Suzette Jeroso-Dequito, Health Promotion Unit head, emphasized the crucial role of nutrition in maintaining overall well-being amidst festivity.
In a press conference on December 5, Dequito highlighted the significance of “Pinggang Pinoy” as a food guide for a balanced and nutritious diet. She encouraged everyone to adopt this easy-to-understand guide for a healthy lifestyle.
“We always go back to the ‘Pinggang Pinoy’ [considering it as an ideal guide to make healthier food choices],” Dequito said, adding that following it, one can achieve a balanced plate, reducing the risks of health issues like diabetes and hypertension. Also, noting the importance of moderation in our food consumption.
“Pinggang Pinoy” is a visual tool that uses a food plate model to show the right proportions of food groups for each meal. It highlights the essential food groups and allocates proper portions to ensure a nutritionally balanced meal. The guide includes a balanced distribution of rice or alternative staples, vegetables, protein sources, fruits, and dairy or dairy alternatives. This approach not only supports proper nutrition but also helps in maintaining a healthy weight and reducing the risk of chronic illnesses.
In the context of holiday celebrations, the DOH-6 also underscores the significance of limiting the intake of sugary beverages and foods.
Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and physical exercise is also encouraged, contributing to a healthier lifestyle and reducing the likelihood of illnesses, accidents, and injuries during the festive season.
As Filipino families prepare for the holiday season, by practicing the principles of the ‘Pinggang Pinoy’ to make informed and health-conscious food choices, individuals can not only enjoy a flavorful celebration but also contribute to a healthier and more resilient community.
