In line with Proclamation No. 1215, series of 1998, declaring May 1-7 of every year as “Linggo ng Paggawa”, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Office No. 6 paid tribute to the informal workers by holding the 2021 Labor Day Celebration for the Workers in the Informal Sector at Brgy San Jose, Miagao and in Igbaras, all in Iloilo Province.
Themed “Kaligtasan, Katatagan, At Pagbangon Mula sa Ekonomiyang Nasadlak Dulot ng Pandemya,” the Regional Office acknowledged the worker’s contributions to the nation’s progress.
In his message, Regional Director Cyril L.Ticao recognized the workers in the informal sector as one of the most powerful forces that propel the country’s progress.
“You are one of the pillars of our economy and May 1 of every year is dedicated to honor you. We salute your efforts and contributions and your resiliency in helping keep the economy afloat despite the challenges of the pandemic.”
Ticao also assured the workers of DOLE’s continuous support by enhancing their skills and providing opportunities for livelihood and employment.
DOLE RO No. 6 through its Iloilo Field Office (DOLE RO No.6 – IFO) prepared a package of activities which includes an orientation on DOLE programs and services and workshop on the individual business plans.
In partnership with TESDA, the regional office also facilitated the orientation on skills training such as shielded metal arc welding, processed foods, baking and pastry, electrical installation, organic agriculture, motorcycle and small engine servicing and dress making.
Participants were also given a chance to ask questions regarding the different programs and services of DOLE during the open forum.
Ninety-one workers from the mountainous barangays of San Jose, Wayang and Tan-agan in the Municipality of Miagao were honored during the celebration.
“We travel this far to show our concern and support to the marginalized informal workers especially in remote areas,” said IFO Head Melissa S. Navarra after crossing two rivers and traversing a rugged, uphill road in going to the area.
In the municipality of Igbaras, Iloilo, 60 informal sector workers were also given tribute and skills training orientation.
