The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Iloilo 2nd District Engineering Office is constructing a storm surge protection structure in Dumangas, Iloilo, to safeguard residents and enhance the coastal landscape.
The PHP 43.1-million project includes a concrete seawall, paving blocks, railings, and solar-powered LED streetlights. The infrastructure not only fortifies the coastline against natural disasters but also transforms the area into a vibrant tourist destination.
Known as the Dumangas Esplanade, the project provides an ideal venue for festivals, recreational activities, and sunset viewing. It has become a popular spot for Zumba sessions, walking, jogging, and other community events.
According to District Engineer Allan Rey R. Pajimna, Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel highlighted the project’s dual benefits of enhancing coastal security and fostering community development.
“This esplanade is part of the Department’s commitment to community safety and development. It provides residents a secure environment while creating a beautiful recreational space that can boost local tourism and community activities,” Oropel said.
The Dumangas Esplanade is expected to serve as a hub for social and recreational activities, contributing to local tourism, economic growth, and residents’ quality of life. (DPWH)
