The construction of a 116-lineal meter flood control structure along Aklan River in Brgy. Bakhaw Norte, Kalibo was completed on time, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Aklan District Engineering Office.
District Engineer Noel L. Fuentebella said the construction of the flood mitigation structure project, which costs P13.58 million, started in August 2019 and was completed in February 2020.
Fuetebella said the project involved the construction of a concrete revetment wall on steel sheet pile foundation and installation of fabricated reinforced concrete hexapods to prevent scouring and reduce possible damage on the structure that may be caused by strong wave impact.
“This structure is now ready to act as barrier to mitigate flood risk and ensure safety of the residents living near Aklan River as well as protect their livelihood from damage that may be caused by water overflow or soil erosion especially during rainy days,” Fuentebella said.
Around 2,000 residents of Brgy. Bakhaw Norte are residing near the river, hence, the completion of the project is a big help in the protection of their lives, homes and properties. (DPWH-6/RPAIO)
