Travel between Sta. Barbara and New Lucena in central Iloilo, along with nearby towns, is now more convenient thanks to the upgraded road project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office overlaid asphalt on the existing New Lucena-Sta. Barbara Road, improving transportation access and reducing travel costs.

The PHP 122.499-million project, funded under the FY 2023 DPWH Infrastructure Program, involved asphalt paving of a 5.28-kilometer, two-lane road. It also included a 613-meter lined canal, sidewalk, and 222-meter concrete shoulders.

DPWH Region 6 Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel said the road improvement significantly extends the life of the concrete pavement without requiring complete repaving. The upgrades ensure a smoother and safer surface for all road users compared to patching or sealing methods.

“The improved and upgraded road will facilitate faster and more convenient travel between Sta. Barbara and New Lucena and nearby towns. Motorists will also benefit as asphalt roads are vehicle-friendly,” Oropel said.

To enhance safety, especially at night, reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings and warning signs have been installed along the road, Oropel added.

“These markings are crucial at night to guide motorists in staying within their lanes and to warn pedestrians to avoid entering the marked areas, preventing accidents,” he explained.

District Engineer Mario G. Soriano highlighted the cost efficiency and noise reduction benefits of asphalt roads. He noted that overlaying roads with asphalt enhances mobility for people, goods, and services, boosting the economy and improving access to basic services.

“Asphalt overlaying offers numerous advantages, including cost efficiency, extended pavement lifespan, aesthetic improvements, safety enhancements, quick installation, and environmental benefits, making it an ideal choice for maintaining various road surfaces,” Soriano said.

The project underscores the DPWH’s commitment to providing reliable infrastructure that improves mobility and fosters economic growth in Iloilo.
