A man died from drowning after he went swimming in a fishpond at Dumangas, Iloilo afternoon of February 14.

Police said that Jimilyn Donguines, 25, a resident of Barangay Sulangan, Dumangas, was drunk when he decided to take a dip in the fishpond.

Senior Master Sergeant Kim John Banzon, Dumangas police chief investigator, said that the victim had a drinking session with friends Sunday morning.

He later went to a cousin’s wake shortly after their binge drinking ended.

By mid-afternoon, he asked a 7-year-old neighbor to accompany him to a nearby fishpond.

The two played ball while swimming.

Banzon said there were also other young kids in the area. Not far from them was a man who was hook fishing.

The boy later pushed the ball to the edge of the fishpond and didn’t return to swim with Donguines.

The victim was seen submerging himself in the water. When he failed to emerge a few minutes later, the boy attempted to swim and look for him.

But the man who was fishing nearby cautioned him against it. He instead called for assistance in looking for Donguines.

The man was later found and rushed to the Ramon Duremdes District Hospital. Banzon said Donguines died while undergoing treatment.
