BACOLOD City – A man who was reportedly drunk died while another was injured in a shooting incident at Barangay Caningay, Candoni, Negros Occidental on Monday.
Police Captain Ronald Santillan, town police chief, identified the fatality as Claudio Navarro Jr., 60, a farmer, of the said village.
Santillan said that Navarro went to the house of his nephew’s employer to confront him but he allegedly shot 23-year-old Raymart Cañete, who is also working at the said house.
Santillan said that Josesimo Lopez, 53, a member of the Barangay PeaceKeeping Action Team (BPAT) responded to pacify the commotion.
Lopez was able to grab Navarro’s firearm but the latter drew his bolo and attempted to hack him, prompting him to shoot the latter twice.
Navarro succumbed to two gunshot wounds on the neck and face.
Police recovered from the scene a homemade .38 caliber revolver with live ammunition, four empty shells, and a bolo.
Santillan said Cañete was brought to a hospital in the town after sustaining a lone gunshot wound on his right thigh. He was later transferred to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital here and was discharged the following day.
Santillan said that Lopez was under police custody while they are waiting for Navarro’s family whether to pursue the filing of charges or not.
He said that grudges within the family triggered the incident because Navarro was previously hacked by his nephew due to his behavior when he got drunk.
He said that Navarro was previously jailed but was released after he availed of the parole.
