BACOLOD City – A 29-year-old man surrendered to the police after he allegedly hacked a distant relative in Barangay Minautok, Calatrava, Negros Occidental last Monday.

The victim was identified as Toribio Maanu, 59, a farmer.

Captain Jesus Alba, deputy chief of Calatrava Municipal Police Station, said Maanu was drunk when he allegedly stormed into the house of suspect Junrey Mahinay.

The victim was looking for the suspect’s father when he allegedly challenged Mahinay to a fight, leading to a heated argument.

The victim then allegedly hacked the suspect in the shoulder. This irked the suspect, prompting him to also hack the victim in the head which caused the latter’s death.

Alba said the victim reportedly accused the suspect’s father of telling stories that he was a nobody.

“Gapalapta kuno storya ang tatay sang suspect na wala siya pulos na tawo, amo to kung makainom siya gina sulong niya,” he added.

Alba said they are looking into grudges as a motive in the incident.

Alba said that Mahinay, who suffered minor injuries, will be released from police custody if no charges will be filed against him within the 36-hour reglementary detention.
