BACOLOD CITY—A 39-year-old sugarcane worker died after being struck with a bolo during an altercation with his live-in partner’s father in Barangay E. Lopez, Silay City, Negros Occidental, late Sunday night.

Police identified the victim as “Ruben,” who was reportedly intoxicated and causing alarm and scandal at home.

Police Major Sarah Villanueva, deputy police chief of Silay City Police, said the 52-year-old suspect went to the victim’s house to pacify him. However, the victim became agitated and allegedly grabbed a bladed weapon.

The suspect left the victim’s house, but the victim reportedly followed him to his home. Villanueva said the victim began hacking at the suspect’s door, attempting to break in.

The suspect retaliated by stabbing through the door with a bolo, hitting the victim in the left armpit. The victim was taken to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Villanueva noted this was the first instance of the victim acting violently while drunk, adding that the victim and the suspect had no previous conflicts.

The suspect voluntarily surrendered to barangay watchmen and was later turned over to the police.

The victim’s family has decided to press charges against the suspect.
