Trade Secretary Cristina A. Roque lauded Filipino entrepreneurs and partner financial institutions (PFIs) as “the heart and soul” of the Philippine economy during the 2025 MSME Asenso Awards held on March 21 in celebration of the event’s 30th anniversary.
“Today, we honor the heart and soul of the Philippine economy — our micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and our partner financial institutions who have played a pivotal role in driving inclusive and sustainable growth across the country,” Roque said during her keynote speech.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recognized 25 outstanding MSMEs and PFIs for their innovation, resilience, and contribution to local development.
“These honorees are the risk-takers, job creators, and changemakers who uplift our local economies,” Roque said.
Among the awardees was a former dishwasher who began selling dumplings with just one kilogram of pork, eventually growing the venture into a food cart franchise with a commissary and warehouse.
Another honoree included a group of individuals with physical disabilities who established a livelihood association, creating employment opportunities for their members.
Also honored was a medical facility that overcame pandemic-era challenges and emerged as a top healthcare provider in its province.
From Mindanao, a young designer-entrepreneur from Maguindanao gained recognition for blending cultural heritage into a successful fashion business.
“These are not just business success stories — they are stories of perseverance, creativity, and purpose,” Roque said.
“They embody the very essence of the ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ vision, where every Filipino has the opportunity to rise, thrive, and contribute to our nation’s shared prosperity.”
Roque also emphasized the critical role of PFIs in accelerating regional growth by efficiently utilizing Small Business Corporation (SB Corp)-awarded credit lines, maintaining sound financial health, honoring loan covenants, and posting strong repayment records.
The DTI chief reiterated the department’s commitment to building an inclusive, competitive business environment.
She highlighted government support programs, including DTI-SB Corp credit facilities, Negosyo Centers, and capacity-building initiatives, which empower MSMEs to scale and sustain growth.
The 2025 MSME Asenso Awards, organized by DTI-SB Corp, marked three decades of recognizing MSMEs and PFIs aligned with the agency’s development and financing goals.
