To strengthen the practical training of future architects, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Philippine Architecture Schools Association Inc. (PHILASA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on March 20 to embed industry construction standards into architectural education.
The agreement aims to integrate CIAP Document 102 – Uniform General Conditions of Contract for Private Construction into the syllabi of contract-related architecture courses, either as a reference material or added learning objective.
This move is designed to close the gap between academic instruction and real-world construction site practices.
The MOU signing was facilitated by the Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines (CIAP), an attached agency of the DTI, through its implementing arm, the Philippine Domestic Construction Board (PDCB).
The partnership highlights the importance of understanding contractual rights, obligations, and industry standards, all of which are crucial for effective project supervision, monitoring, and construction management.
“This initiative underscores our shared goal of equipping architecture students with the professional skills and industry-aligned knowledge needed for success,” said PDCB Executive Director Doris U. Gacho.
A key component of the MOU is the technical training of faculty teaching architecture and engineering courses, specifically on construction contracts and CIAP Document 102.
The training will ensure that professors, instructors, and faculty members are equipped to deliver accurate, industry-relevant content to students.
This will strengthen collaboration between government and academic institutions while enhancing the delivery of technical education.
By emphasizing practical application and adherence to national construction standards, the DTI and PHILASA aim to produce a new generation of architects and engineers ready to contribute meaningfully to the country’s infrastructure and construction development.
The partnership also supports the broader goal of raising professional standards and boosting growth in the Philippine construction sector.
