East Java Terminal gears up for September launch with new hybrid cranes

East Java Multipurpose Terminal (EJMT), a key facility operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), is set to commence operations in September, bolstered by the recent acquisition of two advanced Konecranes Gottwald post-Panamax ESP.8 mobile harbor cranes.

The newly delivered cranes, equipped with state-of-the-art diesel-electric hybrid systems, are designed to handle a diverse range of cargo including bulk, project, and container shipments.

EJMT’s Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Chan, emphasized the importance of these cranes in the terminal’s development.

“The equipment is central to our ongoing development of the Lamongan terminal, which, upon completion in September, will serve as a new domestic and international gateway for our customers.”

The hybrid cranes feature a unique combination of a diesel engine, a three-phase generator, and ultracapacitors that store electrostatic energy.

The setup allows the cranes to efficiently manage peak power demands, thereby reducing overall diesel consumption—a move in line with EJMT’s commitment to sustainable operations.

Holger Wagner, Konecranes’ regional sales manager for the Asia-Pacific, praised the partnership with EJMT, noting, “We are happy that we were able to convince EJMT with our state-of-the-art drive technology. The cooperation was excellent from the beginning, and we are confident that both cranes will provide the handling flexibility and rates EJMT is aiming for.”

The hybrid cranes are the latest addition to EJMT’s growing equipment fleet, which also includes reach stackers, empty container handlers, and container spreaders. Additional equipment such as grabs and hoppers are expected to arrive by late August, further enhancing the terminal’s operational capabilities.

EJMT is strategically positioned within the 80-hectare Lamongan Shorebase complex, a hub designed to support Indonesia’s offshore oil and gas industry.

Located 60 kilometers west of Surabaya, the terminal is poised to become a significant player in the logistics and shipping sectors of Lamongan, Tuban, and central Java.

Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Manila, ICTSI is recognized globally for its port development, management, and operations across various regions, including Asia Pacific, the Americas, and Europe. The company’s commitment to sustainable development and transparent transactions has earned it a reputation as a leader in public-private partnerships in the global port industry.
