EDC, Knowledge Channel Launch Biodiversity Education Campaign

The Energy Development Corporation (EDC) has partnered with the Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) to launch a multimedia awareness campaign promoting biodiversity conservation in the Philippines.

The initiative, officially formalized through a Terms of Reference signing on March 24, 2025, is part of EDC’s Flagship Species Initiative (FSI), a core component of its environmental advocacy program, BINHI.

EDC, the country’s leading 100% renewable energy producer, aims to highlight the urgent need to protect threatened native tree and animal species across its geothermal and wind project sites.

“With KCFI’s support, we can ensure that species like the Visayan Tarictic Hornbill and the Apo Myna continue to thrive in their native landscapes for generations to come,” said Atty. Allan V. Barcena, EDC’s Assistant Vice President and Head of Corporate Support Function.

Representing EDC alongside Barcena was Ronino C. Gibe, Head of Corporate Relations – Head Office, while KCFI was represented by its President and Executive Director Rina Lopez and Vice President Edric C. Calma.

“At KCFI, we believe in the power of education to drive meaningful change, and we are excited to collaborate with EDC in protecting our country’s natural heritage,” Lopez said during the signing at Rockwell Business Center Tower 3.

The partnership will develop two long-form educational video lessons and nine short animated clips, aimed at raising awareness of Philippine biodiversity and inspiring proactive conservation among youth and the general public.

These materials will be distributed through KCFI’s broad network of on-air, online, and offline platforms, reaching students and learners in both urban and remote areas.

EDC’s Flagship Species Initiative is dedicated to restoring natural habitats, conserving Philippine native trees, and engaging communities in protecting endangered species through education and collaboration.

Since its launch in 2008, the BINHI program has restored more than 10,000 hectares of degraded forestland, working with 88 forest-based communities across the country.

It also champions the propagation and use of native Philippine tree species in nationwide reforestation projects, supporting long-term biodiversity resilience.

“Through EDC’s Flagship Species Initiative, we are actively working to restore habitats, raise awareness about conservation, and engage local communities to secure the future of our country’s threatened wildlife,” Barcena added.

This collaboration comes on the heels of EDC’s recent participation in the 5th Philippine Environment Summit (PES), held February 19–21 in Iloilo City, organized by Green Convergence.

With the theme “Ako Ang Bukas: Quantum Leap to Climate Neutrality,” the PES brought together government agencies, civil society, businesses, faith groups, and indigenous communities to explore cross-sectoral action on climate and environmental sustainability.

As climate and biodiversity crises grow more urgent, partnerships like the one between EDC and KCFI aim to build a stronger culture of environmental responsibility and awareness across generations.
