A 61-year-old woman died while her husband sustained non-life-threatening injuries after their tricycle was rear-ended by a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on the morning of Jan. 21 in Barangay Cabugao Sur, Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.

The victim, identified as Virginia Majaducon of Barangay Buyo, Sta. Barbara, succumbed to head injuries.

Her husband, 67-year-old Leonilo Majaducon, who was driving the tricycle, is now in stable condition.

Police reports stated that the couple was riding a tricycle along the innermost lane of the national highway when the incident occurred.

According to Capt. Raphy Señeres, Sta. Barbara police chief, the tricycle was about to make a U-turn when it was struck by a Mitsubishi Xpander MPV driven by Marvin, 28, of San Julian St., Janiuay, Iloilo.

Authorities are investigating whether Marvin was speeding or tailgating the victims’ tricycle and if the tricycle driver had signaled a left turn at a safe distance.

Both victims were rushed to the Asia Pacific Medical Center in Jaro, Iloilo City, but Virginia was pronounced dead on arrival.

Señeres confirmed that Marvin is currently detained, and charges are expected to be filed against him pending the results of the investigation.
