ERC Approves NGCP Projects to Boost Grid Reliability

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved three capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), aimed at strengthening grid reliability in Luzon and the Visayas.

The projects, with a combined value of PHP 38.09 billion, address critical transmission infrastructure needs in key areas.

In the Visayas, the PHP 4.2-billion Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay Transmission Project will resolve overloading issues in the Nabas Substation, Nabas-Caticlan 69kV line, Caticlan-Boracay line, and Manoc-Manoc 69kV Load End Substation.

This project will improve power supply reliability in the Panay Islands and is expected to be completed by May 2025.

For Luzon, the ERC approved the PHP 17.09-billion Bolo-Balaoan 500 kV Transmission Line Project, which will serve as a backbone for the northwestern Luzon grid.

The project is vital for integrating offshore wind power and other renewable energy projects, as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, to secure the region’s energy future.

The ERC set a November 30, 2026 deadline for the project’s completion.

Another major Luzon initiative, the PHP 16.8-billion Northern Luzon 230 kV Loop Project, will upgrade the transmission corridor serving Cagayan, Kalinga, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte.

It is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2028, and aims to tap Northern Luzon’s renewable energy potential.

“The approval of these projects underscores our commitment to ensuring the reliability, security, and affordability of our country’s electricity supply,” said ERC Chairperson and CEO Monalisa C. Dimalanta.

Dimalanta emphasized the importance of timely and efficient project completion to accommodate increasing power demands across communities, businesses, and industries.

The ERC’s approvals reflect the government’s broader push for grid stability and renewable energy integration in line with national development goals.
