Escudero, ICC and ‘legality’

By Reni M. Valenzuela

Your use of pure Tagalog in answering questions when you were interviewed yesterday about the issue of the International Criminal Court was amazing. But please forgive Mr. Chiz Escudero because I did not see justice or wisdom in your responses. It is sad because you are now the president of the Senate of our Republic.

It seems that you are only looking at the issue of “legality” and you have forgotten the issue within the issue – the heart and justice for the thousands who have been victims (and will be victims) of the blessed violence – so for you it is “no simple” and “complex” ICC matters. Which lawyer gave you such a thought? No wonder. Or which friend pleaded with the good senator?

One plus one equals two. I’m sorry The “controversy” on this topic is just that simple — if we sum it up. You are confused because it seems that the value you have learned is not in the right direction or direction, with due respect, my dear legislator that I used to admire.

You must realize that the issue is not about the ICC but about the justice or darkness that surrounds and surrounds the bloody drug “war”, past or present. What is appropriate now? Do you want a change in the future or do you intend to keep the crooked path, forever?

“Do not judge unjustly. Be fair to the poor and do not fear the rich. Judge according to righteousness and truth.” – Leviticus 19:15

What is higher for you, Mr. Senate President? Justice or “law” excuses? And what change do you think President BBM’s “New Pilipinas” wants to achieve if there is any change in the rule of justice?

Criminals are blatantly ignoring the law to allow their evil deeds to be allowed, why does the government have to ignore sanity, reason and justice — because of the law or “law” that the criminals are ignoring?

Isn’t that kind of way of thinking and other “legal” arguments of many of the so-called “legal minds” the root and reason why stupidity and decay prevail in our society rather than justice and development?

Many criminals are acquitted, especially those with money and power, and the influential — just as many are punished who are innocent, poor and mere henchmen of their masterminds and masterminds.

Call it “law”, but not justice.
