ROXAS CITY, Capiz – A former inmate was shot dead on the evening of August 31 by two suspects on a motorcycle while he was outside his residence talking on his cellphone in Sitio Tuyop, Barangay Carmencita, President Roxas, Capiz.
The police identified the victim as alias “Aweng,” a 49-year-old laborer and resident of the area.
According to Police Chief Master Sergeant Rez Bernardez, chief investigator of the President Roxas Police, the victim was standing on the road in front of his house around 8 p.m. when the suspects arrived on a motorcycle.
The passenger drew an unidentified firearm and shot the victim.
The victim managed to run about 30 meters, but the suspects pursued him and fired again until he collapsed.
The suspects fled the scene on the motorcycle, heading in an unknown direction.
The victim was rushed by the President Roxas Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to Bailan District Hospital in Pontevedra town but died a few minutes later.
The victim sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the left side of his chest and other parts of his body.
Police recovered eight empty shells from a 9mm caliber firearm at the crime scene.
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the incident.
The victim had previously been jailed a few years ago after being caught in a gun buy-bust operation conducted by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Capiz for selling an unlicensed firearm.
Police are seeking the support of witnesses to help identify and arrest the suspects.
