BACOLOD CITY — Ten houses were razed by fire at Zone 2 Centro, Barangay Mambulac, Silay City, Negros Occidental, last Tuesday after children were reportedly seen playing with matchsticks.

Fire Superintendent Rodel Legaspi, the city fire marshal, said the blaze destroyed six houses and partially damaged four others. The fire broke out around 12:06 p.m., originating from an unoccupied house.

A resident reported seeing children playing with matchsticks near the unoccupied house, according to Legaspi. He added that strong winds, combined with the area’s dense population and proximity to a river, made the situation challenging.

Most of the houses were made of light materials, which contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, he noted.

The fire was declared out after an hour, and no injuries were reported. The fire caused an estimated P96,250 in damage, according to Legaspi.

Mayor Joedith Gallego met with the fire victims yesterday to discuss their plans and extend assistance.
